Synopsis:
The first recorded references to dragons appeared well over 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumer; e.g., a cylindrical seal from 4000 BC depicts a dragon alongside the goddess Bau.
These references may have originated with serpent myths of the ancient Egyptians, such as those of Aapep and Typhon.
Most certainly these were mythological accounts, but historical in the sense that, when we reach the threshold of over five millennia, the boundaries between myth and history blur.
Myths are not merely metaphors or fanciful stories; they are what remains of a long-forgotten past, the records of a lost civilisation.
We must remember that in some of the earliest records, dragons once ruled over humans.
Rather than writing down mere stories, our forefathers were writing down eyewitness accounts describing real events and encounters.
The underlying conclusion is that the great preponderance of dragon myths throughout the long history of humankind seems to indicate that there must be some truth to these legends and that the myths themselves are historically accurate accounts, however masked over time.
